How Do I Verify My Identity to Get a Companies House Filing Code?

At the high level there are two options - use the government's One Login system that allows you to complete the process via Companies House, or use an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). To decide, there are some key questions you should consider:

Why wouldn't I use Companies House's own system?

Companies House uses the government's One Login solution for identity verification, whereas an ACSP will offer their own process. At face value they do the same job. However, concerns have been raised about One Login's data security. Reports suggest it is failing to meet mandatory minimum government cybersecurity standards, and the National Cyber Security Centre found it carried the risk of identity theft and bulk theft of personal data.

If you're comfortable with that risk, the next consideration is support. There are reports of the system being "glitchy", particularly during the identity verification step, with users getting ejected from the process. Others mention confusing language and poor support, with some reviewers reporting considerable frustration leading to abandonment.

Are all ACSPs the same?

ACSPs tend to offer various services including Companies House verification. If all you need is a filing code, it can be confusing - some may not have a digital service, and others may require minimum check quantities when you only need one.

The critical thing to check is that the ACSP uses digital identity verification technology accredited under the DIATF certification programme - part of the government's Trust Framework passed into law in 2025. Without this, the service may be insecure and put your data at risk.

How much does it cost?

The government's One Login system is free, though the saying "no such thing as a free lunch" applies given the risks and issues. ACSPs offering better support, data security, and user experience cost as little as £10 + VAT, going up to over £100 for some services.

Our advice: look for an ACSP that lets you do it all online, has transparent pricing, and allows you to buy just one verification if that's all you need. Make sure they hold DIATF certification - such as rapidverify.co.uk, which is £10 + VAT per check, allows single purchases, and is both DIATF and ISO certified.
